After the success of their debut, La Busta Gialla, Il Sogno Del Marinaio, the trio of bassist Mike Watt, guitarist Stefano Pilia and drummer Andrea Belfi, return with a more focused effort that clearly defines the band’s sound.
Where its predecessor floated on dreamy waters in the languid haze of humidity, Canto Secondo strips the group down to their core instruments, allowing the musicians to feed off each other, gaining strength as the songs progress. The resulting ten songs blend the fuzzy excitement of Italian greats like Confusional Quartet with Goblin‘s fluid soundtracks, though elements of Robert Fripp‘s heavier licks with King Crimson definitely creep into Pilia’s guitar. Watt’s bass rumbles with the ingenuity of Stanley Clarke in his Return to Forever days, while Belfi plays with the controlled reserve of The Jesus Lizard‘s Mac McNeilly, constantly moving in syncopation without resorting to overhanded drum acrobatics. Here, three insanely talented musicians get together to make music they love, and, thankfully, they see fit to share it with us.
Now with their vision firmly cemented, Il Sogno Del Marinaio have plotted a course sure to bring them further into musical exploration. Perhaps Iggy Pop would even consider using them as a backing band for his recent quieter, introspective solo work. One can only hope.
