Portland (by way of Minneapolis/St. Paul) dream poppers Is/Is are primarily Sarah Rose and Sara Nienaber (with help from Mara Appel on drums). They just dropped this limited edition cassette (with download) last month. As I parse through these peaceful recordings, I am struck by the expansiveness of this recording as well as the spareness of the instrumentation. Fans of Best Coast, Opal, Mazzy Star, Trespassers William, and even Frankie Rose will be in familiar territory, but that’s not to say this is derivative. On the contrary, it is a lovely piece of work that resonates quietly in your head space. Give it time to work its magic, and you’ll come away wanting more. Like “Pennant”, which populates the same cinematic territory as Beach House. Or “My Time (Taking)”, which is like reveling inside someone’s beautiful dream where Liz Fraser has a starring role. I even hear echoes of The Rain Parade in these grooves, so this release could easily fit into the Paisley Underground brand of jangle and dream pop. Worth picking up for fans of all these bands, and for supporting a band I expect to hear a lot more from.
