JB Meijers - Rock und Roll (Zip Netherlands)

28 May 2026

Discogs says this prolific 53-year-old Dutch guitarist from Delft, Netherlands has appeared on 210 releases as producer or musician since the early ‘90s; in addition to being in bands Charmin’ Children, Shine, De Dijk, and The Common Linnets, he currently tours with Mercury Rev. On his fourth solo LP, following 2021’s The Beginning and Everything Before, he’s joined by formidable drummer Joost Kroon; together they bang out colossal, turbocharged guitar rock, with each song topped off by Meijers’s unruffled, no-nonsense wail. To wit, the relentless “Forgotten By Rock ’n Roll” and seething “Canvas Horizon” recall Inferno-era Motörhead, the ferocious “Redefined” is fueled by swift, U2/The Edge-like arpeggios, and the hulking “Where Time Dissolves” and “Stargazer” summon Killing Joke. Meanwhile, Haarlem’s Wouter Planteijdt, whose superb 2019 Bullhorn and 2022 Bullhorn II LPs I reviewed in issues 85 and 90, contributes soaring guitar to the Moody Blues/Pink Floyd-invoking “Crescendo’s Wake.” But as the Nada Surf-tinted “Second to None” (not the Avengers song), T.S.O.L.-like “Strong,” and Offspring-ish “In Dust We Trust” attest, Meijers has a knack for catchy pop melodies, too.
