I’m all for clever arrangements, sophisticated production and ambitious songwriting construction. But sometimes I want to hear something simple and heartfelt. If you ever get the same urge, Austin’s JUDE/ROSS can satisfy it. MICHAEL ROSS‘s songs avoid fancy turns of phrases, broad dynamics or complex chord changes. The band and producer RANDY REYNOLDS of LEATHERBAG give them a plainspoken setting that puts no barriers whatsoever betwixt music and ears. “On the Hudson,” “Evelynn” and “Stolen Day” simply channel Ross’s heart directly to your speakers, leaving you the choice to let him in. Ten songs, 25 minutes, no fornicating around – Jude/Ross presents itself as nothing but what it is. An exotic meal is good for expanding one’s horizons, but there’s a reason homecooking is still the staple.
