Kye Alfred Hillig, a songwriting fixture within the Puget Sound underground, returns with The All-Night Costume Company, his ninth solo record. Hillig initially retired from music, but fans should be glad he found the inspiration to return because this record features hallmarks of poignancy and humanity within every song, delivering cohesive yet somber themes. Hillig does not appear to project a persona championing the ‘working class songwriter’ that is down on his luck, but instead, embraces his supporting band to craft haunting yet strong melodies. Billed as a ‘collective force’ as opposed to a supporting band, Hillig leans on guitarist David Bilbrey, keyboardist Bill Nordwall, bassist Yoswa, drummer and multi-instrumentalist Jasen Samford, and backing vocalist Annie to complete a very personal record. The album rarely strays from slow and measured tempos, which some may find a bit melancholy, but those who value deep and personal lyricism will come away feeling like they discovered a diamond in the rough thanks to the powerful pen of the Puget songwriter. A welcome return for long-time fans.
