LIAM MCKAHEY was the voice of the forever-bubbling-under British band COUSTEAU. And what a voice it is – a soulful, supple baritone made to break hearts and put them back together again. As such, he continues in the vein of his former band, swimming in pools of melancholy romanticism, with occasional dips into up-tempo tides. As a singer, especially for this kind of material, he’s the best. But in Cousteau, his voice was the vehicle for the excellent songs of DAVEY RAY MOOR; on his own, he doesn’t have the same source. McKahey’s own pen is plenty sharp, but he’s a better lyricist than melodicist, and some of these songs float off into the ether without leaving an impression. But when he’s got a strong song on his lips – the dreamy “Serafina,” the sly “Lovers & Fools,” the almost impossibly gorgeous title track – the record effervesces like a diamond splashed by moonlight. Once McKahey’s writing talents catch up with his vocal chords, he’ll make the angels pledge devotion.
