Hailing from England’s Sussex countryside, Men Oh Pause deliver four dark, anxiety-ridden synthpunk tunes awash in paranoia.
Pulse Check blends the raw, lo-fi four-track sound of the ’90s Olympia, WA scene with the artier releases on Crass Records by combining stark production with unnerving songs. Flipper-esque basslines drive haunting synthesizers and monotone vocals to a disjointed beat. The overall effect is like The Screamers having a bad trip in a carnival, or Ghost & Goblin stripped down to their bare essentials. It’s a captivating release full of bleak emotions and ominous melodies.
Though just a taste, Pulse Check is just enough to whet the appetite for more Men Oh Pause. Hopefully, they aren’t quiet for long.
