What happens when you combine the spawn of a Beatle, Deerhoof‘s drummer, a Ceramic Dog and a projectionist? You get Crotesque. For this extremely limited release, the regular duo of Sean Lennon and Greg Saunier were joined by multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily and film jockey Martha Colburn (whose 16mm projector can be heard throughout the recording) at WNYC where the session was broadcast on David Garland‘s show “Spinning on Air.”
Clocking in at just under 20 minutes, the lone title track is a psychedelic freakout akin to the earliest recordings by Krautrock bands like Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel and Kraftwerk in their original incarnation as Organisation. Saunier’s drums are more Rashied Ali than Keith Moon, providing the perfect percussive basis for Lennon and Ismaily to interchangeably explore bass, guitar and synthesizers in a seamless stream of spacey guitars, noise-laden passages and heavy riffs. The overall result is very Acid Mothers Temple.
Though only 1500 copies of the 12” were pressed for Record Store Day Black Friday 2013, there are still some available, so pick up Crotesque before it becomes an eBay collector’s item.
