NOFX is certainly one of the most prolific punk bands of the last 25 years. The Longest EP compiles 30 songs from the past 20 years, with special emphasis on their EP output (hence the name). Classics such as “The Longest Line”, “Kill All The White Man” and “You’re Wrong” are included. Additionally, previously unreleased outtakes and songs featured on compilations such as Rock Against Bush and Take Action are featured. If you’re a NOFX fan, you probably have many of these already, but the alternate versions and unreleased stuff makes it worth the pick-up.
While they have a well deserved reputation for goofiness, NOFX also has a serious side. Though lead singer Fat Mike tends to revel in his drug addled lifestyle (“Codependence Day”, “I’ve Become An Alcoholic”) songs such as “Cokie The Clown” and the heartbreaking acoustic version of “My Orphan Year” (sample lyric “2006 goodbye parents/ For once, I’m sincere / 2006 that was my orphan year” ) show a far more expressive side.
Of course, NOFX’s love of all things Punk Rock shows thru on “Jaw Knees Music” (sort of a “how many punk rock song references can you find”), “13 Stitches” and “Hardcore 84”. And their political activism is ever present (ie: ““I Am Going To Hell For This One” and “Concerns Of A GOP Neophyte”).
Too bad they didn’t throw a live version of “The Decline” on this. Maybe next compilation?
