It’s too bad the magazine
No Depression is no more, as
OLD CALIFORNIO would surely be one of its cover stars. Led by songwriter
RICH DEMBOWSKI, the Pasadena band masterfully blends folk, country and pop into a rich, satisfying brew. Admittedly, there’s little here sonically that hasn’t been done before – it’s a tradition that stretches back to the 60s, after all. But ultimately
Westering Again is about the songs more than the sound, and witty but heartfelt cuts like “From the Mouths of Babes,” “Lazy Old San Gabriels” and the nicely rocking “Warmth of the Sun” make stylistic ambition irrelevant. Old Californio is a song band, and
Westering Again firmly makes the case that that’s enough.
