England’s Presents for Sally is reassuringly great whenever they find the time to release music. It’s been awhile since we last heard from Matt, Anna, and Phil, but it was worth the wait. When you listen to all the swirls and eddies that fuse together into the winsome A-side, “Wishawayfortoday”, you’ll get what I mean. It’s the kind of song I can’t get enough of, a song that isn’t quite long enough to satisfy this listener. From stem to stern, I love this song to pieces. It bounces and darts around you with swooning layers of sound and electronic tomfoolery around the 3 minute mark. And then we have the B-side, “Hits Like Kisses”, which starts off quietly before ascending into smashing ‘gazer heaven. It builds like waves crashing on the shore (and I even swear I hear the sound of an airplane in there) and pummels you into submission. But even then, Matt’s sweet vocals are at its core and anchor the song from drifting into orbit. All in all, a really good single that bodes well for the band’s upcoming album, which can’t get here soon enough!
