Quest For Fire – s/t (Tee Pee)

Toronto’s QUEST FOR FIRE originally started a side project for members of garage rockers THE DEADLY SNAKES and metalcore act CURSED; as those bands dissolved, QFF coalesced into permanent form. The quartet sounds little like either of its forebears, instead traversing the mysterious terrain between late 60s psychedelia and early 70s hard rock. As is so often the case these days when musicians rediscover this era, the results are impressive. CHAD ROSS‘s airy voice soars over both the crunching riffs of “Bison Eyes” and the dreamy waves of “You Are Always Loved,” while the rhythm section drives the music both into the sky and deep underground. Throughout there’s enough song structure to highlight the melodies, but enough interstellar drive to keep it trippy. Nice.
