Rachel Bazooka – Colorbl nd (XIV)

12 March 2010

Based around songwriters/musicians BUCKS BURNETT and HUBERTUS WINNUBST and producer SALIM NOURALLAH, Dallas-based psych/pop ensemble RACHEL BAZOOKA is anything but Colorbl nd. Sort of a less trippy take on the sound of Burnett’s former outfit the VOLARES, RB strains catchy melodies and mellifluous grooves through a mildly acidic strainer, giving the entire album a warm, psychedelic glow without mindbending theatrics. A double-disk set recorded over five years, Colorbl nd moves through quirky electropop (“Amateur Magician”), dramatic rock (“Adjust the Stars”), rocking anecdotes (“Chrissie Hynde”) and a passel of sharp pop tunes (“Darkwing Angels,” “Ten Tall Stars,” “Flower in Her Hair”). Winnubst isn’t a particularly charismatic singer, but his voice is pleasant enough, and the band gets around his limitations by mixing his larynx as if it was another instrument. As with most double records, this one might have made a stronger statement if it had been pared down to a single, but how does one decide after five years which songs stay and which don’t?
