There’s no mistaking the debt Ringo Deathstarr owes to My Bloody Valentine. The Austin trio’s brand of noisy but melodic shoegaze springs directly from MBV’s fertile, if only occasionally active, loins. But guitarist Elliott Frazier, bassist Alex Gehring and drummer Daniel Coburn at least attempt to give the iconic sound of the early 90s a fresh coat of paint and some new tires. While steering well clear of Swervedriver territory, RD does bring a certain aggression to the table – the pounding “New Way” balances floating vocals with screeching feedback, while the title tune adds dance beats and enthusiastic shouts to the mix. “Prisms” takes a more gossamer approach, wafting through the breeze with just enough melody to keep it from dissolving into atoms. The EP ends with a lovely take on “Just You,” a heady piece of romantic fluff from the Twin Peaks soundtrack. Due to its brief length, this four-song 10-inch EP doesn’t showcase the band’s ability to sustain intensity over time. But it does serve as a nice taster of its rocked-up, expansive shoegazer vision.
