Last seen as a leader with Countdown, an album of standards and covers, vibraphonist Simon Moullier makes his return to the racks with Isla. Primarily a collection of originals Isla also expands the French musician’s band, adding pianist Lex Korten to the vibes/bass/drums core. The keysman proves a vital presence, providing chordal backdrops and tight harmonies for Moullier’s brisk melodies, and turning in a few impressive solos, like the extended break on the title track. Moullier himself also contributes some stunning leads, playing with a lyricism that denotes as much time listening to piano and horn players as fellow vibists, and a swing that comes from old-school pioneers like Lionel Hampton. He also writes tunes that compliment those strengths, giving “This Dream,” “Empress of the Sea” and “Heart” an adroit balance between lush textures and earthy performance. Expanding on the general excellence of Countdown, it’s no surprise that Moullier also demonstrates a deftness with other composers’ material as well, particularly on the standard “You Go to My Head.” Well-written and executed even better, Isla keeps Moullier’s forward creative momentum going.
