After an excruciating amount of time, I finally caved and watched all 8 episodes of Netflix’s Stranger Things in an evening, transported back into the 80’s in a whirl of synth-y bliss. It’s media like this that can remind us of how refreshing it is to step back and embrace the culture and sound of older generations, and that’s what Los Angeles outfit Mild High Club lets us accomplish, with their freshman album, Skiptracing.
Ultimately, it’s refreshing. Easy listening? Sure. But with nods to associates like Mac Demarco, although it’s not entirely unique, Skiptracing offers us deeper insight into Brettin’s work. It’s groovy, and applied to the motif of, “a private investigator attempting to trace the steps of the sound and spirit of American music”. Skiptracing will be out on August 26th via Stones Throw.
