Accurately described as “a compilation of A-Sides, B-Sides and an EP from the recent past,” the vinyl-only collection Ghosts represents the American debut of the British duo SMOKE FAIRIES. Singers/guitarists/songwriters JESSICA DAVIES and KATHERINE BLAMIRE filter American and British folk and blues through their gorgeous vocals and ringing guitars, singing songs that could’ve been written two hundred years ago as easily as yesterday. A tune like “Frozen Heart” combines a sense of ancient Englishness with a bluesy slide guitar mantra, not so much fusing two cultures as finding the common ground. “Fences” contradicts itself by floating on an ethereal cloud of earthy sensuality, mysterious and forthright all at once. “Living With Ghosts” and “Morning Light” lay piercing emotion on a bed of languid psychedelic folk, caressing flesh with roses still adorned with thorns. Bittersweet in its burnished beauty, Ghosts haunts the grooves like phantoms called from a past not yet born. Smoke Fairies indeed.
