Steve Weinstein - Last Free Man (steveweinstein.net)

Steve Weinstein Last Free Man steveweinstein.net
9 June 2014

After twenty-six years of philosophy and theoretical physics, Steve Weinstein finally returns to music with his first album since 1987’s Walkin’ by the Light of the Moon.

Last Free Man is a series of memories and observations somewhere between Elvis Costello and Bob Dylan with the rock accessibility of Tom Petty. Whether talking about lost loves, as in the opening “Lost & Found,” or commenting on the voyeuristic qualities of our tech-obsessed society, Weinstein remains thoughtful about his tales, as if his lyrics are a thought experiment that will ultimately reveal the secret of the situation. While many of his songs are soulfully upbeat, it’s the slower, meandering tracks like “No Vacancy,” with its doo-wop sway, and the psychedelic-flavored Come-like “Storm Warning” where the songwriter really shines, i.e., within the space of quiet beauty. It’s a dynamic album showing just what 26 years of intense thinking can bring to a musical palette.

It may have taken Weinstein more than a quarter of a century to finally deliver his sophomore solo effort, and that’s okay because Last Free Man doesn’t sound rushed. Rather, it’s very relaxed, intimate and passionate, the sound of one who lives in the tactile world of inner space. If it takes another twenty-five years for album number three, so be it. It’ll be worth it.
