The Beatles - And God Saw That It Was Good (Independent, Cassette)

21 March 2011

This cassette, a pretty chunk of sick right-brained rock jams, is a tasty lemon-lime work of art. These kids make a lot of deprecating and sly jokes in of and around the tunes, which have a quick-cut basement 4 track feel which is fairly consistent. They don’t take anything seriously (thank fucking god) not even The Beatles . (Aside: Ok, I’m sure the name won’t last forever, but I appreciate it on a level above The Tape Beatles or Beatallica or any of that.. it’s both divisive, derisive and a pisstake. I’m stoked that there is a The Beatles playing around town that sounds this good.)
Musically they immediately invoke shades of Minutemen with doses of riffs scalped from MC5 and Stooges . There’s enough chops between them all to pull it off proper, parts of tunes like “OC/DC” and the shredding echoey “GIC” are fucking aces.. and some of the best tracks I’ve heard yet from a Montreal band. Though the cover lists a side B, it seems like it’s blank, either that or my ancient tape player is fucked.
There is some serious shred and energy on display here. Live, they are finding their crazy too. I’m stoked to see what the future coaxes out of these St-Henri dwelling punks.. hopefully it’s scads of great lo-rent rock like this joyous tape and not a litigious foot up their asses.
