Martin Phillipps, acclaimed singer/songwriter from the equally fabulous group The Chills, is on a roll. He’s emerged in the last several years with one of the finest albums of his career (Silver Bullets) and this version of The Chills is better than ever. Following last year’s Record Store Day release, The Chills return with a fine single “Rocket Science” / “Lost in Space”. As ever, Martin’s writing is succinct and subtle, tucking in ecologically and politically minded comments in his silvery songs. The new song “Rocket Science” repeats the mantra ‘but the silence, it’s compliance, and that’s not rocket science’. Fueled by an upbeat, medium rock tempo and a lovely melody, Martin gets his message through clearly! In this twisted, chaotic world we live in, this is a much needed dash of ice water to the senses! The B-side “Lost in Space” was originally penned in 1981 and discusses a young man’s alienation with the world around him. Finally recorded three decades later, it reflects a cool dichotomy of old and new, displaying a younger man’s reflections while coming to life under the skillful hands of Phillipps and his excellent band. It holds up to the brilliant work on Silver Bullets and is a must have release for Chills fans everywhere!
