Germany’s Dawn Band is one of those groups who love so many iterations of music that the members couldn’t decide on a single direction, and thus head off in several at once. Multi-instrumentalists Daniel Zerndl and Martin Treppesch dig prog, shoegazer psychedelia, pop, moody folk, stoner metal, old-fashioned acid rock jamming and whatever the hell it is Radiohead does, and simply mash it all together on Agents of Sentimentality. The record could have been an unfocused mess as a result, with the duo sounding like a dozen different bands sharing a studio. But the Dawn Band has a strong grasp on melody, and that’s the thread that keeps the intricate “Kussnacht,” the poppy “City Lights (Shine On)” and the shoegazery prog epic “Surfing the Big Wave” the products of a single vision, rather than dilettante dicking around. Fans of eclectic guitar bands like Motorpsycho should check out the Dawn Band forthwith.
