It’s a sound that will never die, apparently – and thank Shel Talmy for that. Italian trio the JUNE trucks in unabashedly 60s-worshipping psych pop on its debut album Magic Circles. It’s difficult – make that impossible – to argue that the band is doing anything new with the form. Everything you’d expect is here: vocal harmonies, backwards guitars, sitars, graceful pop melodies, hopped-up rhythms, mini-garage pop anthems. The trio’s mastery of not only the sonic trappings of 1967 but also the melodies and hooks waves aside that moldy scent – tunes like “Big Black Mouth,” “Living in the Park” and “Barber Shop” make it clear that a pure love runs through these boys’ veins. Innovation? Never heard of it. But updating a classic genre for a new generation isn’t the June’s bag – a public display of affection for vintage 60s pop music is. Don’t be surprised if this album dominates Little Steven’s playlist for a while.
