Innovation in rock & roll is well and good, and mostly welcome. But sometimes you just wanna get back to three chords, big hooks and caffeinated energy, ya know? The LEN PRICE 3 are the perfect band for that mood. The Medway Delta trio (within which is no one named Len Price) pledge allegiance to the pioneering power pop of the 60s WHO, the KINKS and the JAM and little else. But why fix a format that isn’t broken? Pictures, LP #3 from the LP3, is a half-hour of excitingly vibrant and exceedingly tuneful guitar pop songs, with plenty of bright harmonies, clanging guitars and clever lyrics. No keyboards, little orchestration (some unobtrusive strings on “Jack In the Green”), no guests, nothing but a band, their songs and their enthusiasm. “You Tell Lies,” “Keep Your Eyes On Me” and “The Girl Who Became a Machine” would be hits in a fair universe, but since this is not that universe, you’ll have to make ‘em hits in your own world.
