The perpetually underrated
LOVETONES return in style with their fourth album
Dimensions. Bandleader *MATTHEW J. TOW*’s masterful mix of *DAVID BOWIE*esque balladry and 60s psychedelia leans hard on the latter half of the equation this time around – possibly a consequence of Tow’s moonlighting tenure in
THE BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE. That’s hardly a bad thing if done properly, and the Australian band’s sparkling acid rain makes Tow’s irrepressibly tuneful songs shine like diamonds caught in sunlight. “Moonlit Suite (Her Room)” is a gorgeous opening theme, “There is No Sound” strains Simon & Garfunkel through a
Revolver filter, and “Journeyman” and “Love and Redemption” are simply spectacular psych pop confections. The irresistibly affecting “Song For Humanity” adds the Bowie back into the mix without stinting on the psych. “A New Low in Getting High” finds Tow co-writing with BJM auteur
ANTON NEWCOMBE for a better song than the Massacre’s created in years. A beautiful record,
Dimensions is psychedelic pop that way it should be done.
