A few years ago, Words On Music reissued Mania, the second and final album from 80s jangle pop troop THE LUCY SHOW. Now the label is going further back in time and resurrecting the English band’s first LP …undone, making its CD debut. Though heavily in thrall to the stark, demi-gothic postpunk of JOY DIVISION, the COMSAT ANGELS and the early CURE, the Lucys have a lighter, more melodic touch. Stripping away the haunted atmosphere of its inspirations, the quartet lets its crystalline guitar lines and boyish vocals stand in almost stark relief from studio clouds, giving tunes like “The White Space,” “Remembrances” and “Wipe Out” an air of melancholy instead of gloom. This is the kind of music 80s college radio used to gobble up with a spoon, and well they should have. Mania is generally considered the more mature, fully realized album, but …undone has considerable charms of its own.
