The Morning After Girls – Alone (self-released)

11 July 2009

Following up their self-titled compilation of EPs, the New York/Australia quintet the MORNING AFTER GIRLS unleash Alone, as fully formed a debut statement as one could wish for. Admittedly, the band won’t win any prizes for originality here – these songs fit neatly on the shelf marked “psychedelic shoegazer,” all undulating melodies, effects-frosted guitars, tense rhythms, breathy singing and reverb. Cynics could play spot the influence easily – SWERVEDRIVER crunch here, MY BLOODY VALENTINE ether there, JESUS & MARY CHAIN seethe contrasting with early BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE sway. But that’s just nitpicking – in truth these five young men put these familiar elements together as well as anybody from the original wave of acid-drenched dream pop. Or, to put it more bluntly, “Death Processions,” “Who is They,” “The General Public,” “You Need to Die” and the rest of the tracks just plain sound incredible, and couldn’t feel any more right. It may have been done before, but at this moment no one does it better.
