Anyone who thinks that Australia market-cornered ‘70s Detroit rock revival (35 years of Radio Birdman and The Saints’ 1000 children!), should hear this new, boss Raleigh, NC foursome. Sure, hundreds of kids would like to be as bad-ass riff-ramalama-raucous as the Motor City madmen MC5, but on just their first LP, The Static Minds already have the requisite firing forward thrust, meaty, wild, screaming guitars, slam-bang exhilaration, cutting chops, groove, unhinged attitude, and iron-tight attack. If this kind of superlative execution and rave-up ferocity is rare in a debut, it’s because the members hail from established bands in the research triangle, past and ongoing. Yet they play together like devils, and shake like “The American Ruse,” “The Human Being Lawnmower,” and “Sister Anne” are the bible, and they’re fire and brimstone preachers. The well-titled Electricity feels blasting hot, not retro boring; kick out the jams, mofos! (Custom Made Music)
