Boyracer‘s Stewart Anderson teams up once again with frontman Justin Burch (Soft Paws/Inspaceno!) for a second offering of oddball pub rock.
Thee Unlikely Return of… comes across as The Dead Milkmen weened on Dr. Feelgood and The Stranglers. Twisted minute-long punk blasts like “Art School Kids,” “Turn Her On, Turn Him Off” and “It’s the New Thing!” somehow make sense next to soulful ballads, such as “I Wanna Push You Out of My Arms” and the “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”-ish “Punchline.” Then there’s the garage mod of “We Don’t Hang Out Anymore” and “Can’t You Just Leave” placed next to the disco-infused “A Love That Bites” and the dark, hyper-emotional indie pop of “Climate Change, USA.” It’s a head scratcher for sure, but one that keeps you coming back because this time it will all make sense.
Is this the last we’ll hear from Thee Headless Kings? Hopefully not, as they possess a special kind of quirk. Have a drink and stay for a bit. You might learn something. Or not.
