Apparently leading rising progressive metal band Between the Buried and Me isn’t quite enough for Tommy Rogers, AKA Thomas Giles, so he lets his muse out to play on Pulse. Giles gets seriously textural and moody here, as if picking colors from Porcupine Tree, Massive Attack and Daft Punk‘s Tron Legacy soundtrack and using them to paint abstract canvases that still evoke mass appeal. Pianos, guitars and angst move through “Suspend the Death Watch,” while electronic heartbeats power “Catch & Release” and “Reject Falicon.” “Hypoxia” and “Sleep Shake” adopt an atmospheric pop style, with guitars, warm textures and a Steven Wilson fetish. “Reverb Island” adds more synths and propulsive pop melodies for the LP’s obvious anthem, while “Medic” re-inserts the metal that is Giles’ usual stock-in-trade. Some might accuse Pulse of being too eclectic, but Giles’ melodic and production instincts remain consistent throughout, allowing him to establish a solo personality.
