The first 7” by London’s Turbogeist burns white hot from the first Sonics -esque drum roll. This fresh new group of misfit rockers have forged a sound entirely unique out of the sagging genres of punk, garage and metal. Greasy and rough around the edges, both the A and the flipside underscore a threatening urgency in their playing as if they were seconds away from smashing all their gear, setting fire to the stage and starting a brawl. Which is exactly the edge of danger lacking from most so-called punk bands these days and what lifts Turbogeist up from the sea of mediocrity. “Alien Girl” with it’s c-r-ampy lyrics hits a pounding wallop straight away and is over before you’ve had a chance to exhale. It’s an apt introduction to the sledgehammer chops swung by the snarling quartet, giving way to harder, darker and more metallic riffs of “Rats” .
Recorded in Toronto at Tiny Apple Studios, you couldn’t find a more teeth gnashing salvo for a band that’s beginning to find it’s stride. The ferocity of their tracks serve as a small window into the chaos and intensity of their live show which have all the elements of danger and destruction we need in a rock band… that red line held up by fierce and capable musicianship. Enjoy the hell out of this first release by a promising young band and catch them live, if you dare!
