Various Artists – Blue Skies Daisy Days (Planting Seeds)

16 March 2009
This compilation serves two purposes. The first is to raise money for the Keep a Breast Foundation, an organization which educates young folks on methods of early detection and prevention of breast cancer. The second is to gather cool tracks from 21 (count ‘em) independent and underground pop acts from around the world. The latter is key to the former, of course – how is Planting Seeds going to raise the scratch of we don’t dig the sounds?

Fortunately, that’s not a problem. The CD is overflowing with luscious melodies, sparkling production and heartfelt performances, all of which are so damned consistent it’s difficult to highlight individual tracks – it’s literally all good. There are tons of acts here worth exploring further – A.M. VIBE, THE SEE SEE, THE LEFT OUTSIDES, THE PARSON RED HEADS, THE STEVENSON RANCH DAVIDIANS, THE TAMBORINES and veteran JOHN MOORE (the JESUS & MARY CHAIN, BLACK BOX RECORDER, his own band the EXPRESSWAY) are just the tip of a glistening iceberg. If forced to pick favorites, it would be the tracks featuring LOZ COLBERT – both his solo “Rainy Days on Sunday” and his INTERNATIONAL JETSETTERS cut “Inside Out” are just wonderful. But you could say that about the disk as a whole. One of the best compilation albums I’ve heard in a long time.
