Seattle’s Week of Wonders is probably the most un-Seattle band you’ll ever hear. Somehow, the trio, featuring members of Orca Team, The Intelligence and The Torn ACLs, lacks the depressive frustration that marks the Pacific Northwest’s music scene, instead opting for a soothing island sound.
“Piggybacks” is a lilting number marked by a Caribbean beat and a guitar that inexplicably sounds like a steel-drum. The rhythm section rolls like the crashing waves on the beach, tumbling and receding with the tide. Smooth, reverbed vocals float over the music, completing a perfect soundtrack to a lazy day on the beach with nothing more to worry about than getting another drink. “End of the Day,” on the flipside, slows things down a tad, but keeps the dreamy coastal vibe afloat for a perfect lackadaisical evening.
It’s a short vacation, but a much needed one. We all deserve one, so take Week of Wonders for a sail and get away for five minutes.
