Wobbler pledges allegiance to the classic era of progressive rock – i.e. the 70s. The Norwegian band almost has no choice – lead singer Andreas Wettergreen Strømman Prestmo is a dead ringer for Yes‘s Jon Anderson. But to call Wobbler a Yes clone isn’t quite fair. While there are certain traits these young turks share with the old prog guard’s most famous representative – mostly in the nimble guitar work and some soaring vocal lines – the quintet draws equally from other 70s peers like Genesis, King Crimson and, especially, Gentle Giant. Warm, analog tones, moody counter-melodies and lush keyboards dominate the tracks, giving “This Past Presence,” “In Orbit” and “The River” a homey, lived-in feeling. It might not be enough to entice newcomers, but old-school prog rock fans will take to Wobbler like a bee to a flower.
