New releases, late June 2011!
Iceage – New Brigade (What’s Your Rupture?)
Post punk delivered by teenagers from Copenhagen. Dismal songs that can either bottom out or turn highly melodic. Psyched to see these guys live in August.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra – LP (Fat Possum)
Apparently this band started in New Zealand and are now living in Oregon. Not sure what’s happening here, and maybe that’s why I keep going back to it. Mysterious and catchy kraut rock. Or garage punk. Or hip hop. Or all three.
Iggy Pop – Roadkill Rising (Shout Factory)
Four disc set of live Iggy, well worth the price. Each disc presents 15 or 16 songs from a decade, starting with March 1977 at The Rainbow Theatre in London and ending with Paris radio sessions taped in 2009. I usually try to put reissues at the bottom of my top ten to support current bands but this is that good.
The Men – Immaculada (Deranged)
Reissue of their self-released LP on Deranged. A musical Thunderdome, one where shoegaze and D-Beat enter and nobody leaves.
City Center – Redeemer (K)
Follow up to their 2009 self titled LP. I don’t know too much about them but I really like the way they write songs. Lots of ideas and alternate song structures.
White Hills – H-p1 (Thrill Jockey)
Deformed sludge rock with some ambient texture pieces. Definitely not for the sober. Looking forward to seeing what they can do using this kind of arrangement.
The Undertones – s/t (Drastic Plastic)
1979 classic punk from Northern Ireland. Their debut and still the craziest, most upbeat thing you’ll ever sing along too. Reissued on white or black vinyl from Drastic Plastic
The Wedding Present – Take Fountain (Manifesto)
This came out in 2005, I listened to it a few times recently to get some ideas for recording vocals. This band is consistently great and this record has just as much energy as 1987’s George Best. Would love to see these guys live.
The Slits – Live at the Gibus Club 1978 (Castle)
Love this band but some of their live shows are total disasters. This is a strange one. For starters it sounds like they are playing in front of four people. At times they completely fall apart but right when you expect them to give up and walk away, they come back and pull through. Ari kinda strains her voice during the first 15 minutes but still soldiers on.
Pentagram – First Daze Here Too (Relapse)
Mind blowing guitar work, monster rhythm section and sad, awful lyrics. Every time you say this band sounds like Black Sabbath, Ronnie James Dio kills a puppy in heaven.
