AJ Morocco: September 4, 2011

New releases / Sept 2011!

  1. Samiam – Trips (Hopeless)

13 song LP, their first new material in over five years. Everyone keeps asking the same question – is it a goodbye or a new beginning?

  2. John Doe – Keeper (Yeproc)

Newest solo album, and as usual it pulls influences from many different places and keeps you guessing the whole time. Side note: I am super psyched to see X on Oct 8th here in Denver, having missed them twice before. They are playing Los Angeles in its entirety and screening their 1986 film, The Unheard Music before the show. I’m firmly committed to seeing X live before I die, there is nothing that can keep me from this show, not even the OFF! show down the street on the same night.

  3. Dark Ages – Can America Survive? (Sorry State)

10 song LP. One of the best hardcore records I’ve heard this year, hands down. What makes it so good? First and foremost, these dudes can play. Secondly, Dark Ages aren’t content with simply regurgitating the well worn themes of the past and they don’t seem interested in imitating a specific epoch of punk or HC. Their style is eclectic but midwestern at the same time, and they’ve never sounded so pissed off.

  4. Teen Idles – Anniversary 7” (Dischord)

5 song single, AKA Dischord 100. Repressed and now available on colored vinyl. Contains two songs that were not on 1981’s Minor Disturbance EP, “Adventure” and “Trans Am”.

  5. Seaweed – Service Deck EP (No Idea)

Lots of broken up bands are reforming and touring again, you can blame the recession and/or our national preoccupation with devouring our own immediate history for that. Personally, I’m glad to see some older bands come back around and I’m glad that Seaweed is one of them. Two song EP, both sound like they could be B-Sides from their s/t 1990 debut.

  6. Wild Flag – Wild Flag (Merge)

Although it’s not officially available until Sept 13th, NPR First Listen is streaming the entire record here

  7. Big Troubles – Sad Girls 7” (Slumberland)

Really into this band. Looking forward to their new LP, Romantic Comedy which will be out soon, but until then this two song EP will have to tide you over. They also released a four song EP shortly before this called Drastic & Difficult, which is also worth checking out.

  8. Chamberlain – The Moon My Saddle (Topshelf)

Originally released in 1998, now reissued with three unreleased songs. Hadn’t heard this in a really long time and honestly it didn’t make a huge impression on me when it came out, although it has it’s moments. Many of the early to mid-90’s emo bands were dearly loved by very small audiences for very short periods of time, these guys included. But sadly, I think a lot of them were musically eclipsed or blatantly robbed by a current crop of younger bands who now worship that sound and that style.

  9. The Joy Formidable – The Big Roar (Atlantic)

    Now available on vinyl!

  10. Tommy Stinson – One Man Mutiny (Done To Death)

Didn’t get this until late in the week. Gave it one listen, liked it better than his previous solo efforts. One thing I will say is that Tommy is a really underrated singer, I’ve always liked his fumbled Keith Richards approach to his own lyrics.
