Heavy Rotation

These are some of the songs that I’ve had in heavy rotation lately. What have you been listening to?

  1. Sharon Van Etten – “Peace Sign”

    from Epic.

I went to her show at Lincoln Hall earlier this month having never heard her before. She totally blew me away. And I think if I’d heard it, this album would have made my top 10 for last year.

  2. Maritime – “Guns of Navarone”

from Heresy and the Hotel Choir.

Just saw Maritime last night at The Empty Bottle. A peppy, energetic show of straight forward, but not bland, indiepop/indierock. Would definitely see them again.

  3. Kate Bush – “The Hounds of Love”

    from Hounds of Love.

Nothing new here. This one is always in heavy rotation.

  4. House of Love – “Destroy the Heart”

    from 1986-88 The Creation Recordings.

I heard Jack play “The Beatles and The Stones” on one of his Breakthru Radio shows not long ago and it prompted me to start listening to my House of Love albums for the first time in awhile. Just as good as I remembered!

  5. Craft Spells – “After the Moment”

    from Idle Labor.

Really loving this debut album, out now on Captured Tracks. If you like Wild Nothing and similar artists and their influences, I’d venture to guess that you’ll also like this.

  6. The Wake – “Pale Spectre”

    from Here Comes Everybody.

I love this band and don’t feel that they get nearly the respect or mentions that they deserve.

  7. John Fahey – “I Am the Resurrection”

from The Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death.

When the mood is just right, I can really get into some John Fahey. Especially the album that this song appears on. Nobody, before or since, plays the guitar quite like Fahey.

  8. Josh Rouse – “Directions”

    from Home.

Plain and simple, I love Josh Rouse. I have a feeling he might be a little too MOR for a lot of Big Takeover peeps, but I think he’s one of the best singer/songwriters of the last decade or so.

  9. Radiohead – “Bullet Proof . . . I Wish I Was”

    from The Bends.

If ever a song sounded like being alone, in the pitch black, dead of night, with a crisp chill in the air, this is that song. And for some reason that seems like a good thing to me. Like everything on The Bends, easily my favorite Radiohead album, it’s a classic.

  10. Cat Power – “Moonshiner”

    from Moon Pix.

I’m stretching the truth here. It’s the Bob Dylan version, featuring some of the most beautiful fingerpicking that he ever did, that has actually been in heavy rotation for me. But, I love this version too and apparently none of Dylan’s stuff is on YouTube. So you get Cat Power. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
