Chris Stroffolino: January 28, 2007

The New Orleans Saints may have lost the battle, but not the war

Fashion in music is increasingly like fashion in football…any given Sunday; a strong defense looks stunning down the runway in basic black (the brief return of hotpants); what can “2007” mean to you anyway?

  1. Big Chief Alfred Doucette, “Louisiana Pray”

His new song about the Saints

  2. The Steve Miller Band, “Die Like an Eagle”

Steve Miller sang his old hit with new lyrical twist at the Superdome before the Saints beat the Eagles; who would’ve thunk it.

  3. Negativland, Dyspepsia
  4. The Jam, “Non-Stop Dancin’”
  5. Evolution Control Committee, “Rocked by Rape”

Arguably, they do Negativland better than Negativland.

  6. Aceyalone, “Headaches and Woes”
  7. The Small Faces, “Lazy Sunday Afternoon”
  8. Steely Dan, “Fire in the Hole”

Great piano/pedal steel interplay; back before they got too slick for me in the yacht rock sense….

  9. The Black Lips

Oh yeah, I like ‘indie-rock’ too…. I was gonna say The Pixies’ “Wave of Mutiliation,” (original version), but The Black Lips songs (www.myspace.com/theblacklips) are NEW.

  10. Damon and The Heathens and Top Brown

Fun live show at the WC Creamery here in Oakland (1/12/07), both bands featured trombones as well as amazing drummers to help warm the freezing weather, especially at the end of The Heathens show when it turned into an audience participation jam, with amazing guest vocalists. I may have to write more about these folks soon….
