Dave Heaton: March 26, 2006

  1. Ciccone Youth – The Whitey Album (Geffen)
This 1988 Sonic Youth side project is playful, experimental, and just as exciting as their proper albums from the time. It’s just been re-issued, along with their debut EP Sonic Youth and Thurston Moore’s solo album Psychic Hearts.
  2. Islands – Return to the Sea (Equator)
Watch out for this one next month – this band with former members of The Unicorns is at least as interesting as that band, with a open, airy pop-rock sound that takes in hip-hop, calypso, and more.
  3. Irving – Death in the Garden, Blood on the Flowers (Eenie Meenie)
New album from this great ‘60s-ish rock band has more of a cohesive sound than their debut Good Morning Beautiful. At first I was disappointed that the diversity of style from the group’s five songwriters has been smoothed over somewhat into one personality, but this album’s really growing on me. Their songwriting and playing is as sharp as anyone’s.
  4. Jenny Lewis and The Watson Twins with Jonathan Rice and Whispertown 2000 – First Unitarian Church (Philadelphia) – Monday, March 20, 2006
I had literally just flown back to town, coming straight to this show. But it was a nice one, very laidback and enjoyable.
  5. Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – Etiquette (Tomlab)
Still can’t get this one off my stereo…
  6. Various Artists – Bro Zone (States Rights)
    This one, either.
  7. Ghostface Killah – Supreme Clientele (Sony)
I’ve been playing this in anticipation of his new one, Fishscale, out on Def Jam Tuesday, March 28.
  8. Making mix CDs for my friends
    A favorite hobby, always.
  9. Playing songs on jukeboxes
    Just as good.
  10. The Beatles – Revolver
    Can’t forget about the classics.
