Dave Heaton: May 14, 2006

  1. The Office season finale (CBS, Thursdays)
Was this one of the best sitcom episodes ever? It feels like that way to me. I can’t think of any sitcom, and few TV shows, that had me so wrapped up in a relationship between its characters. And the show’s hilarious too, so even better.
  2. Gnarls Barkley – St. Elsewhere (V2)
Cee-Lo has always been a man with many dimensions, all the way back to his Goodie Mob days. Here Dangermouse’s bright production style becomes the perfect frame for his style, giving it all these soulful, cartoonish sheen.
  3. Neil Young – Living With War (Reprise)
With a 100-voice choir and a stark, Ragged Glory-esque power trio approach driving Young’s protest anthems, somehow this album that everyone’s describing as ‘angry’ comes out sounding joyous and optimistic, and is completely inspiring for it.
  4. The Amazing Race (CBS, Wednesdays)
Those fake hippies keep hanging on, unfortunately – but what’ll happen on Wednesday night’s season finale? I’m excited to find out.
  5. The Go-Betweens – Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express (Beggars Banquet)
I’ve been in a perpetual state of catching up with the Go-Betweens discography, but I like everyone was surprised and saddened to hear of Grant McLennan’s passing. I’ve been listening to this album a lot lately.
  6. Hefner – The Fidelity Wars (Too Pure)
I’ve been listening to a ton of Hefner lately, including this 1999 album, an especially fragile and contemplative album of songs about infidelity.
  7. Tom Tom Club – “Genius of Love”
I’ve been pulling together music for a party this weekend, and thinking of some of my favorite music to hear at a party. This, and the next three choices on this list, come from that process.
  8. The Soul Survivors – “Expressway to Your Heart”
  9. Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys – “Hey Muchachita”
  10. Linda Scott – “I’ve Told Every Little Star”
