Prince – 3121 (Universal)
Hearing a new Prince album for the first time always makes me happy, even if this one is a bit weak in places. Much better than the last few, though…
-
Douglas Coupland – jpod (Bloomsbury)
I get similarly excited by a new Douglas Coupland novel, though I’m only 20 pages into this one so I can’t comment on it much (except to note that it’s Microserfs-esque).

Harry and the Potters with Jason Anderson and The Hungarian Horntails at World Cafe Live (Philadelphia) – Wednesday May 17, 2006
A great night.

The Apartment (NR)
Not all Best Picture-winning movies are horrible, I was reminded the other night when I watched this great 1969 Billy Wilder film for the first time.
-
Son, Ambulance – Key (Saddle Creek)
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how underrated this 2004 album is, wondering why it never got recognized as the brillant genre-tripping, heart-grabbing, atmosphere-filled pop-rock masterpiece that it is.
-
About – Bongo (Cock Rock Disco)
I’m loving About’s weird form of (non-)rock music, cartoonish and warped and wonderfully catchy.
-
Be Here to Love Me: A Film About Townes Van Zandt (NR)
What a powerful, devestating documentary, so much so that it was difficult to watch, though I can think of few cinematic portraits of musicians that are this compelling, this filled with questions and feelings instead of just facts.
-
Tilly and the Wall – Bottoms of Barrels (Team Love)
I can’t emphasize enough how great this album is.
-
The Fiery Furnaces – Bitter Tea (Fat Possum)
This one’s not so shabby either.
-
The Go-Betweens – Tallulah (Beggars Banquet)
Do I need to explain why I’ve been listening to this?
