Shows and Shows

Five great concerts I’ve seen this summer, and five great (or not-so-great) TV shows I’ve found myself watching.

  1. Tilly and the Wall with David Dondero – First Unitarian Church (Philadelphia) – June 16, 2006
  2. Acid House Kings with The Legends and Brown Recluse Sings – Kensington South Forum (Philadelphia) – July 12, 2006
  3. Jens Lekman with Frida Hyvonen and Brrr – First Unitarian Church (Philadelphia) – July 20, 2006
  4. Jose Gonzalez with Juana Molina and Psapp – World Cafe Live (Philadelphia) – July 1, 2006
  5. Joel Kraft with The Boon – Haunted Cream Egg (Philadelphia) – July 28, 2006

Ok, this one hasn’t happened yet, but he’s a friend of mine and great singer/songwriter/performer, so I’m super-excited about it.

  6. Treasure Hunters

An oddly exciting show, considering the cheesy premise of people running around getting clues from cell phone messages, and deciphering codes and such – plus we don’t know what the treasure is, even, so it’s easy to wonder ‘why do I care, again?’

  7. Last Comic Standing

Some of the comics on here are surprisingly funny, though I enjoyed the earlier episodes with tasks and challenges much more than I’m enjoying these more American-Idol style ones based on audience-voting.

  8. Hells Kitchen

A really awful show – take a bunch of people who aren’t especially good cooks and make them go through a boot camp-style competition and combine it with Big Brother-style living/fighting. Somehow I get sucked into it, though.

  9. Scrubs Season 3 on DVD

A very funny show, even though it’s get carried away with its flights of fancy, and is rather repetitive in its characters behaviors. Still fun.

  10. The Wire Season 3 on DVD

I haven’t watched this one yet, either, but I’m in great anticipation of it. It comes out on DVD (finally!) August 8.
