What I’ve been listening to
Five of these haven’t changed from the previous list because hey, they’re good!
Greg Brown’s one of those musicians who keeps rolling on, making music no matter which way the wind of the day is blowing. Lately I’ve been listening to his album One More Goodnight Kiss. I keep getting blown away by the pristine piano-and-guitar setting, by the home-grown food celebration “Canned Goods” (“taste a little of the summer / Grandma put it all in jars”), the farm-town lament “Our Little Town” and, above all, the gorgeous title track with its still so pertinent plea for tenderness amist sadness, anger and war.
I get pretty cynical about this sort of posthumous release, and wasn’t all that taken with the previous one of Elliott Smith’s music. This two-disc set has its flaws too, but it also has some really great, perfectly written songs that stand with his best.
Something about this album is perfect for summer, to my ears.
He’s settling into a groove, but that’s not bad. This isn’t anything earth-shaking, but there’s some nice stylistic vacations mixed in with a bunch of solid tracks in his typical, precise/meditative style.
Bought a used vinyl copy of this the other day and reminded myself of how solid an album it was, minus a couple tracks. With J Dilla’s help he was doing some pretty interesting sci-fi funk. Too bad he hasn’t released anything since.
