Dave Heaton: September 23, 2007

Random – End of September

I’m sticking with this ipod-shuffle method of generating a list for another week (due to vacations and whatnot), though there’s a ton of great music being released lately that I will rave about here soon.

  1. Lil Wayne – “Help”

From The Carter 3 Mixtape – a minute and a half of him rhyming over a loop off the title word, from the Beatles song, of course.

  2. M. Ward – “Cosmopolitan Pap”

From the To Go Home EP. There’s a goofiness to this, and an old-time saloon piano thing, that I really like. I’m not sure that I’ve ever heard this before! (That’s the beauty of the shuffle.)

  3. PJ Harvey – “Dear Darkness”

Piano ballad, a love letter to the blackness of night, off her suprising new ghost-story album White Chalk.

  4. The Kinks – “Sunny Afternoon”

A classic, off Face to Face of course.

  5. Rilo Kiley – “We’ll Never Sleep (God Knows We’ll Try)”

From Take Offs and Landings, long before the weird (but fun!) glitz-pop of their new album.

  6. Stevie Wonder – “Too High”

Another classic! Off Innervisions, of course.

  7. Radiohead – “Black Star”

Wow I haven’t listened to The Bends in years.

  8. Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys – “It’s Time”

It’s time for rocking, Texas-swing style. Off the album of the same name.

  9. Superchunk – “Shallow End”

This says ‘the ‘90s’ to me like nothing else. A great song, still. (“I know you think you’re deep alright / but you should stay in the shallow end!”) From Incidental Music, and no doubt some rare single or comp before that.

  10. Merle Haggard – “Mom and Dad’s Waltz”

A classic Haggard cover of Lefty Frizzell, though for some reason it makes me long to hear Iris DeMent’s amazing cover of it.
