Currently on my mind…
Music I’ve been listening to or thinking about lately. Five albums, four songs, and one shameless plug.
Various Artists, A Number of Small Things: A Collection of Morr Music Singles from 2001-2007 (Morr)
Great two-disc set of atmospheric, electronic pop. Collects all the 7” singles released so far by Morr Music’s label A Number of Small Things.
The Mountain Goats – Heretic Pride (4AD)
The new Mountain Goats album sounds great to me so far. I’m loving the amount of little musical details, and how he’s continuing to vary his singing style.
Nada Surf – Lucky (Barsuk)
This sounds great so far too. Another understated collection of songs, with a lot of feeling and great hooks.
Unrest – Imperial f.f.r. (Teenbeat)
I’ve been thinking about Unrest a lot lately: about what a great band they were, how unique. And about great shows and songs I remember. And great albums, like this one.
Robert Pollard – Superman Was a Rocker (Happy Jack)
Actually, so far I can’t figure out what in the world is going on with this one. It’s billed as 20 years in the making, since he’s singing over old tracks from the ‘classic’ Guided by Voices lineup. But it’s so messy, such a whirlwind that I’m having trouble finding my place in it so far.
Schooner – “Indian Summer”
The Decemberists – “Everything I Try to Do, Nothing Seems to Turn Out Right”
Spent – “The Quarter Conspiracy”
Willie Nelson – “Gotta Serve Somebody” (Bob Dylan cover)
It’s a King Thing, My Teenage Stride, Scary Monster live at Tritone, Philadelphia – Friday February 29, 2008
I’m super-excited about this show, and not just because I’ll be playing records between the bands. It’s because the bands are all great!
