Ten songs for a snow day

  1. Erik Satie – “Three Gymnopedies”

The first “rainy day” mix I ever made started with these, and they still get the job done beautifully.

  2. Nick Drake – “Place to Be”

    Haunting and sad, but amazing.

  3. Norah Jones – “The Long Way Home”

Not as filled with hooks as some of hers, but all the better for it in my view.

  4. Bruce Springsteen – “Nothing Man”

Holdover from last week’s list, but too fitting for this one to leave it off.

  5. Phil Dodd – “Fine in the Sun”

I picked up this EP somewhere a few years ago and this track stuck with me. It has a plaintiveness I find appealing.

  6. Simon and Garfunkel – “Kathy’s Song”

Seems like the sun will come out when this song ends, even if it usually doesn’t.

  7. Death Cab for Cutie – “Transatlanticism”

Truthfully, this opus winds up on a lot of my lists, but today it’s on this one.

  8. Rilo Kiley – “Pictures of Success”

I came across this on a sampler a few years back and now own most of their stuff. But I think after listening to all of it, this is still my favorite.

  9. Windmills – “Toad the Wet Sprocket”

They could get over the top sometimes, but this lesser-known album cut always stood out for me, and still gets played when the songs that charted are usually ignored.

  10. Iron and Wine – “Naked as We Came”

Really, this list could just be ten I&W songs and it would work nearly as well.
