The Ten Best Albums of … 1993
I also briefly state what each artist is up to this year, to maybe determine how long 20 years actually is.
The Breeders – Last Splash
Touring this album, awesomely.
Pet Shop Boys – Very
Making their best album since this one (see: Electric).
Slowdive – Souvlaki
Defunct; Neil Halstead is back to making music that could be compared to Slowdive, with Black Hearted Brother.
Catherine Wheel – Chrome
Defunct.
Nirvana – In Utero
Making occasional appearances with new frontman Paul McCartney.
Unrest – Perfect Teeth
Defunct.
His Name Is Alive – Mouth By Mouth
Quietly active.
The Posies – Frosting On The Beater
Touring this album, making great new ones as a band, as solo artists, as session men, with side projects, etc. The dream lives.
Swervedriver – Mezcal Head
Touring, releasing first new music in 15 years (see: “Deep Wound” single).
P.M. Dawn – The Bliss Album…?
Health problems, like an awful resolution of the ellipsis and question mark of the album’s title, but I still believe in this group’s utopia.
Also…
Most honorably: Red House Painters, The Afghan Whigs, Stereolab, The Juliana Hatfield Three, Jimmie Dale Gilmore
Entirely aware I left out: PJ Harvey, Wu Tang Clan, Smashing Pumpkins
Footnote: Possum Dixon, unfairly, but their debut album anchors the year in my mind more than any other.
Hugely important amendment, 12/18: I’m not sure why Liz Phair’s Exile In Guyville wasn’t on the master list I chose these ten from, but just pretend it’s up there near the top.
