Greg Bartalos: February 19, 2006

  1. Idlewild Warnings/Promises (Capitol)
Fantastic album. Standouts include “The Space Between All Things” and “Love Steals Us from Loneliness.”
  2. The Go-Betweens Oceans Apart (Yep Roc)
Addictive. Many great songs including “Darlington Nights” and “No Reason to Cry.”
  3. Behold…the Arctopus Nano-Nucleonic Cyborg Summoning (Troubleman)
Heavy metal meets prog rock meets jazz. Utterly original and a great name to boot. Get the 17-minute EP for just $2.97 on iTunes. (Thanks for the tip Ari!)
  4. Wes Montgomery Smokin’ at the Half Note {live} (Polygram)
Hear why Pat Metheny calls this “the absolute greatest jazz guitar album ever made.”
  5. For Against December (Words on Music)
This 1988 release, after being out of print for years, is now available. Highly recommended.
  6. Belle and Sebastian “Act of the Apostle”
A great way to begin the album. Fantastic chord progressions and jaunty piano playing.
  7. Stars “Your Ex-Lover is Dead”
Another great album opener and a gutsy one at that considering it’s a duet.
  8. Nada Surf and Rogue Wave – live at Webster Hall (NYC), March 8
Two fantastic bands for just 20 smackeroos.
  9. Eraserhead (Unrated)
Fatherhood has never been so interesting. Finally available on DVD.
  10. Real Time with Bill Maher (Friday, HBO)
The new season just kicked off on the 17th with Dick Cheney giving Bill Maher the equivalent of manna from heaven.
