The first song on the first album after Forever Changes is a total change of direction. Dexterous and frantic, LOVE has rarely sounded so fired up. The second half of the song is especially a delight as guitar and drum amaze. Ironically, the only song Love ever named after a month turned out to be the same month in which ARTHUR LEE sadly passed away. (See Jack’s remembrance and mine.)
I’m relatively new to this and so far so good. For newcomers interested in hearing earlier material go directly to the outstanding When I Pretend to Fall, which melds great songwriting, singing and hooks in equal measure.
This FRANK ZAPPA cover is odd as the title might suggest. The only drawback is that because it is self consciously odd the absurdity quotient gets knocked down a notch. Still, fun for a chuckle.
No sophomore slump here. More energy and virtuoso playing from JOHN MCLAUGHLIN & Co.
Still sounds fresh and exciting. Hard to believe this came out in 1973!
Intensity, power and speed are on full display here. When H.R.’s voice rides in squalling “You better get ready!” you know he means it.
Like the LONG WINTERS above, I’m just getting to know this record but like what I’ve heard so far.
A wonderful effort by Pat that has strong Brazilian influences.
One of the Stranglers’ best. Sung by bassist J.J. BURNEL, this song has been added back to the setlist in many shows this year. Here’s hoping that the rejuvenated band—which this summer parted with singer PAUL ROBERTS and will release its highly anticipated 16th studio album on September 18th—keeps “The Raven” in its live set.
