I’m an absolute sucker for anything with a mad beat. These here are the songsthat never fail to get my head bobbing.
Moby — “Find My Baby”
An epic blues-and-bass track sampling Boy Blue ’s song Joe Lee’s Rock (which is an equally good listen).
Ratatat — “Wildcat”
Don’t get me wrong, these guys are great. But if you listen to the New York-based duo for an extended amount of time it’s easy to feel like one track is only two or three beats different from the last. This is an exception. It’s multi-faceted and has an impossibly catchy beat. It scores bonus points for sampling the roaring sound my computer used to make when I shut it down.
The Presets — “Cookie”
With every LP release the Australian electro duo have veered towards more house-style club anthems. Their earlier efforts were darker, grittier and had way more edge.
Underworld — “Holding the Moth”
Daft Punk — Musique Vol. 1 1993-2005 (Virgin Records)
This compilation album is missing their track “Daftendirekt” and is therefore only approximately 2.47 minutes away from perfection.
Kraftwerk — Trans Europe Express (Kling Klang)
The German electro outfit laid the groundwork for what we know as electro music today — if it just sounds like robot noise to you, listen closer until it makes sense.
Mirwais — “Disco Science”
A friend of mine once told me listening to this song made her earlobes bleed. I told her it made mine dance.
Ladytron — “Seventeen”
M.I.A. — “Bamboo Banga”
LCD Soundsystem — 45:33 (DFA Records)
It’s a soulful and funky album, and I definitely like LCD Soundsystem when they’re in a good mood and not sulking about the demerits of New York City. Standout tracks are one, two and seven.
