Twilight of the Idols – “Need You Tonight”
(Some of my favorite covers that I’ve been listening to this week.) This is an explosive cover of the INXS classic produced by former Nine Inch Nails drummer and co-founder Chris Vrenna. It’s great to hear the song updated with such powerful electronics, sexy vocals, and bombastic yet slinky guitars.
Listen.
The Newlydeads – “Mental Hopscotch”
A very odd version of the Missing Persons song from Faster Pussycat singer and Cathouse founder Taime Downe’s dark electro side project.
The Cure – “Purple Haze”
I found this on a bootleg CD at Generation Records in the West Village. It’s a lot more psychedelic than Jimi Hendrix’s version.
Revolting Cocks – “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy”
Totally weird and sleazy. All of Rod Stewart’s cheezeball songs should be covered by Al Jourgensen and RevCo.
Rasputina – “Bad Moon Rising”
From the excellent covers album, The Lost & Found, this version of the Creedence Clearwater Revival classic is fragile and ominous.
Error – “Homicide”
I always love covers that give the heavy treatment. 999’s song is made even more sinister with scattered, spastic electro beats.
Love and Rockets – “Ball of Confusion”
More bands should make spooky updates of Motown classics like this one by The Temptations.
Sonic Youth – “Get Into the Groove”
The Whitey Album by the so-called “Ciccone Youth” is strangely appealing, and this fuzzy, arty version of the Madonna smash hit is just genius.
The Black Neon – “You’re So Vain”
It’s just a computerized voice reading the lyrics to Carly Simon’s ode to a mystery lover (Not Mick Jagger, she swears), but it’s nevertheless enjoyable.
Laibach – “The Final Countdown”
This ridiculous Europe hit will never be the same now that I’ve heard these Slovenian industrial juggernauts make it so sludgy and evil.
